A research project is now ongoing that collects data on how people throughout Sweden travel in connection with purchases in their everyday lives. Special focus is on understanding more about how we e-shop and how that affects how we travel. This type of data is unique and is missing today. By understanding how purchasing habits affects our travel patterns, researchers can help traffic planners find solutions that work in everyday life. When you share information about how you travel and shop, you are involved and contribute to solutions for the transport system of the future. The project is run by Lund University and Trivector.

Knowledge of your habits provides better solutions
Knowledge of how our purchasing habits affect when and how we travel is currently missing today in several areas. Changes such as digitalisation and the pandemic have affected both the in-store and online offerings. Understanding more about how we solve our purchases in everyday life and how we combine these with doing more errands when we are still on our way to pick up children, visit the recycle station or exercise is of great importance for traffic planners to create a well-functioning transport system. By better understanding how we travel in everyday life and how it varies between days, we can create a better transport system that really works in people’s everyday lives. Better understanding provides better solutions.
Better data with new methods
The studies that are usually carried out on people’s travel habits often have short collection periods where the participants themselves indicate how they have travelled. New methods for collecting data on travel patterns, such as via mobile phone with the TravelVu app, enable a much more detailed description of trips over a longer period of time. With this type of new data, research can describe how often different types of travel are made, how often different destinations are visited and how different means of transport are used in a much more precise way than before.
The travel survey is done using the TravelVu app that you use on your mobile phone. You shouldn’t change the way you travel or shop, just have your phone with you. Then the app will help you record your travels and where you shop. You will check, adjust and agree that the information is correct.
The study will run for 40 days from Monday, April 4, 2022. You can join the survey during the whole period. You can terminate your participation in the survey at any time.
No results will be published so that individuals’ data can be read. The research project complies with applicable legislation regarding data protection such as GDPR. We hope you are interested in participating!
How to participate
This is how you check and correct your trips in TravelVu
The TravelVu app analyzes your GPS tracks and helps you describe how you traveled during the day. To ensure that your travel day is described correctly, it is important that you, who know how you traveled, review and possibly edit the description. When the travel day is correct, mark this and we will include it in the project.
➀ Activity: Has TravelVu entered the correct activity? If you need to change, just tap the activity and enter the correct one. Next time you are in the same place, TravelVu remembers what you did last time and suggests it.
➁ Trips: Check if the trips are described correctly, if not you can easily change means of transport, time and distance.
➂ Is the day correct? When the description is correct, just mark it correct.
➃ Questions about e-shopping: in connection with you checking that the day is correct, we will also ask you some short questions about your e-commerce. You can easily answer them directly in the app.
